Education and Classes


We provide a minimum of 8 hours of classes with each new sewing machine or serger purchase.

Registration Information:

Please register early for classes and clubs as we require time to prepare kits and class handouts. Classes and clubs with insufficient registration will be canceled with 72 hours notice given to those who are registered in the class.

Class size is limited and registration is accepted in the order that payment is received.

Most classes and workshops that are listed here are for adult participants. Visitors, including infants and children are not permitted in classes or workshops.

Supply costs are extra. Supply lists are provided at the time of registration and all supplies must be purchased from SEW for IT!

Please book a machine at the time of registration if you do not wish to bring your own sewing machine. Students must provide their own Schmetz needles, appropriate machine bobbins and good quality thread, such as our Mettler and Gutermann threads.

Here are the dates and times for our December Workshops and January Classes.  Dates for January Workshops will be sent at the beginning of January.

December Classes at SEW for IT!

December Workshops
 
Quilt As You Go Placemats 
These are fast to make and a great gift item.  Most students can easily complete two placemats in class.

Christmas Stocking
Join us to make a lined Christmas stocking.  Add a fuzzy cuff or lacy band to complete your stocking.

COST:  $15 plus supplies
Wednesday, December 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  OR  from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
 

 
Quick and Easy Serger Quilt  
Make a lap size quilt top with borders.  All of the students in our class a few weeks ago went home with a completed quilt top.  We provide a kit for the center of the quilt and then you choose your borders.

Cost:  $20 plus supplies (kit plus border fabric)
Saturday, Dec. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. OR Monday, Dec. 12 from 1 to 5 p.m.
 
 
 
January Classes
 
Learn to Sew Classes (for ages 7 to 15 years) 
SEW for IT! is now offering childrens classes in the store.  Children may bring their own machine, or may use a classroom machine.

COST:    $70 (includes all supplies)
STARTS: Saturday, January 14 from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. for 4 weeks


 
Sewing with Sergers: An Introduction  
Learn to use your serger to its full potential in this 4 week class.  The first class is an overview of the serger and a guide to troubleshooting.  The following weeks feature projects using 3 thread, 4 thread and rolled edge applications. Please note: Students are required to supply their own serger, and purchase additional project supplies from SEW for IT!  A supply list will be provided at the first class.

COST:    $60 plus $25 kit fee and supplies
STARTS: Wednesday, January 11 from 10 a.m. to noon for 4 weeks
              Saturday, February 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. for 4 weeks


 
Sewing Machine Basics  
This is an orientation class for sewing machine owners.  Topics covered include threading, winding bobbins, choosing needles and threads, hem and seam finishes and zipper application.  Cleaning and maintenance will also be discussed.  Students are required to purchase a supply kit of all fabrics and notions to complete samples and a tote bag in class.

COST:     $40 (or $0 if machine was purchased from SEW for IT!) plus $25 kit fee
STARTS: Saturday, January 14 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. for 3 weeks



 
Pants That Fit

COST:    $60 plus pattern and supplies
STARTS: Tuesday, January 17 from 10 a.m. to noon for 6 weeks

 
Introduction to Quilting
This class begins with colour theory and choosing fabrics and tools. It continues through cutting accurately with the rotary cutter, sewing with an accurate seam allowance and learning the tips and tricks for piecing quilt blocks.  When the borders are added and the quilt top is complete, you will then layer, machine quilt, label and bind your quilt.  Your new lap quilt (approximate size 50" by 70") will be good for the cool weather.

COST:     $80 plus supplies
STARTS: Tuesday, January 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. for 8 weeks


 
Introduction to Sewing
Designed for those with no previous sewing experience, this class teaches the student how to use commercial patterns and take accurate measurements, select the correct  pattern size and choose appropriate fabrics and notions.  Students will then be guided step-by-step through construction of their project,  Each project builds on the sewing skills learned in the previous session.

COST:     $60 plus supplies
STARTS: Thursday, January  12 from 2 to 4 p.m. for 6 weeks
