There are various types of stabilizers for handling difficult embroidery situations, but here is a brief guide for handling the common situations.

Basic Fabric and Stabilizer Cross Reference Guide

FABRIC

STABILIZER

Stable (non-stretch), and smooth.  eg. quilt cotton, flannel, linen, denim.

Tear-away – on bottom of fabric.

Stable (non-stretch), and textured ("fuzzy").  eg. velvet, terry cloth, velveteen. (See Note 1 below)

Tear-away – on bottom of fabric.  Wash-away or Heat-away – on top of fabric.

Not stable (stretch), and smooth.  eg. interlock, sweatshirt fleece, swimwear.

Cut-away - on bottom of fabric.

Not stable (stretch), and textured.  eg. polar fleece, fake fur.

Cut-away - on bottom of fabric.  Wash-away or Heat-away – on top of fabric.

Please understand that this is a guide only and some fabrics, or techniques can require special attention.   See the instruction manual for your particular machine for the specific embroidery steps.  You may also contact your machine dealer for details regarding the various stabilizers – classes may also be available.

Prepare for embroidery as follows:

1. Place stabilizer (larger than hoop) on table – (see Note 2 below).

2. Place fabric (larger than hoop) on stabilizer.  For textured fabric, place a wash-away or heat-away stabilizer on top of fabric.

3. Place inner hoop on fabric.

4. Centre fabric, stabilizer, and inner hoop.

5. Lift 1, 2, and 3 and press into outer hoop.

6. Ensure that hooping is even all around the bottom of the hoop sections and fabric is not wrinkled. If stretch fabric is wrinkled, do NOT attempt to pull out the wrinkles, instead, remove from hoop and repeat the steps above.

7. Tighten hoop screw carefully, but to prevent damage to the hoop, do not over tighten.

Select and proceed with embroidery as shown in the instruction manual for the specific machine.

NOTE 1:  Textured fabrics, especially velvet, are easily damaged by hooping. In this case, hoop ONLY the stabilizer and use spray adhesive, or stick-on stabilizer, and press the fabric onto that.

NOTE 2: Use 1 layer of stabilizer on the bottom of most designs. For dense designs, add extra layers of tear-away on very bottom, even adding to cut-away stabilizer.
